Starting in 2024, there will be a new freeway vignette, especially for occasional drivers in Austria. In addition, the prices will be newly staggered.
Ten days, two months, or a whole year—that’s how long the familiar freeway toll stickers are valid, which have been stuck to windshields in Austria since 1997 or can now be redeemed digitally. A completely new fourth vignette will now extend these three versions into 2024. The government put this on track in the Council of Ministers on Wednesday as part of an amendment to the Federal Road Toll Act.
“In the spirit of expanding the range of vignettes for occasional users, a one-day vignette is to be introduced,” according to a document from the Chancellery. “Today” reported:
The critical points of the draft clearly state what is planned: In addition to introducing a new one-day vignette per the EU Road Charges Directive, a fixed price scale for the different types of vignettes will also be presented. At the same time, the prices for the year 2024 will also be set.
Meanwhile, the price for the annual vignette has been frozen, and it will also cost 96.40 euros in 2024. This was already announced a few weeks ago as further relief.
However, the fact that the other prices are now derived from the cost of the annual toll sticker on a pro-rata basis leads to a small curiosity: the 2-month toll sticker (30 percent of the yearly price) will be 10 cents cheaper because the key is rounded down. The 10-day vignette (12 percent), in turn, becomes more expensive, from 9.90 to 11.50 euros.
Vignettes: New prices and new categories from 2024
The new 1-day vignette (9 percent) costs just a bit less at 8.60 euros. In 2024 alone, the government expects sales of 5,573,000 vignettes, bringing in almost 48 million euros.
In the future, an annual toll sticker for motorcycles and the like will always cost 40 percent of the total price for multi-lane vehicles. That is 38.50 euros for the coming year.
Although the toll sticker prices for trucks will not be adjusted for inflation in 2024, it will still be more expensive. The government is also pricing in the costs of CO2 emissions from heavy goods vehicles.
This CO2 tangent in the truck toll will be raised in stages over three years. In 2024, the toll will rise by around 7.4 percent for most trucks. 2025, it will increase even more, as inflation will again be considered.
Considering the inflation forecasts by the Austrian National Bank, OeNB, the increase will be around 12.1 percent in 2025, according to APA, and then about 8.4 percent in 2026.
